Along the rugged coastline of the Ionian Sea, Dhërmi stands as one of the most striking landscapes in the Mediterranean. Here, sheer limestone cliffs drop directly into turquoise waters, flanked by olive groves and historic hillside villages. As Dhërmi transitions into an international destination, hospitality architecture faces a defining test: How do we create world-class, multi-facility luxury without erasing the delicate coastal ecosystem and local identity that makes the region extraordinary?
In our studio’s latest hotel project in Dhërmi, we set out to answer this challenge. By integrating a full resort program—including a subterranean wellness spa, traditional hammam, indoor and outdoor pools, fine dining restaurants, and discreet underground parking—into the natural contours of the cliffside, we designed a sanctuary where luxury is defined by immersion, tranquility, and spatial authenticity.
Topographical Integration: Architecture Carved from the Cliff
Rather than erecting a monolithic block that dominates the shoreline, our design strategy follows the natural topography of Dhërmi. The architecture steps down the hillside in terraced volumes, mirroring the region’s historic stone agricultural terraces.
- Concealed Scale: High-impact facilities such as multi-level parking, mechanical infrastructure, and the expansive spa complex are embedded directly into the terrain. This subterranean placement keeps the above-ground footprint surprisingly intimate and light.
The Sanctuary Within: Spa, Hammam, and the Thermal Journey
Subterranean architecture offers a unique atmospheric advantage: control over light, temperature, and acoustics. In designing the hotel’s wellness core, we drew inspiration from the historical Mediterranean bathing tradition, creating a sensory journey through water, stone, and shade.
Gastronomy and Outdoor Flow: Dining Under the Riviera Light
A destination hotel in Dhërmi must celebrate the outdoor lifestyle. The restaurant and lounge areas are designed as open, shaded pavilions that blur the boundary between indoor dining and the coastal breeze.
Destination design is no longer about importing a generic, international resort template. In a place as ecologically and visually rich as Dhërmi, architecture must listen to the land. By balancing generous, high-end amenities with deep environmental sensitivity, our project proves that modern luxury can—and should—feel as if it grew naturally from the cliffs it calls home.
